Volunteer

Your amazingness leaves us in volun-tears!

Without our volunteers, Community Supported Shelters could not provide its current high level of service to unhoused people in our community. Our volunteers have built Huts, prepared meals, helped out with fundraising events, and more!

Current Volunteers

We appreciate all you do! Without you, we couldn’t run our programs as smoothly or give as much back to the community. Your volunteer time is indisputably invaluable, and logging your volunteer hours helps us better articulate community impact and earn grant funding.

Future Volunteers

Volunteer Positions

Safe Spot Laundry Volunteer
Every month, we do laundry for each of our Safe Spot Communities. Having a tote of clothes and bedding laundered free of charge helps our clients look and feel their best. We are looking for volunteers to help pick up and drop off laundry for our Communities in partnership with our client volunteers.

Shower Steward Volunteer

Five days a week, CSS provides a clean, safe, and friendly environment for our clients to shower, wash their hair, and put on clean clothes. Volunteers support our shower steward in keeping our clothing closet organized, sanitizing our mobile showers after each use, and helping to create a welcoming atmosphere for our Safe Spot Community members.

Front Office Volunteer

The front office is where unhoused folks apply for shelter in a Safe Spot Community and sign in once a week to remain on the waitlist. In the winter, the front office is a wood-heated space of welcome; in the summer, a place of respite from the heat. Volunteers support visitors to the front office by offering water, snacks, personal hygiene items, a listening ear, and whatever forms of immediate assistance we can provide. The front office is open M-F, 1-4 pm.

Firewood Volunteer

Our clients and staff attend work parties year-round at which we cut, split, and stack firewood to heat our 14 Safe Spot Communities through the winter. After working together for a couple of hours, we share a delicious meal prepared by our kitchen coordinator. There’s no better way to get to know our clients. We’d love for you to join us on Wednesday and Thursday mornings, 9 am-12 pm.

Haircutting Volunteer

Many of our clients express the need for a haircut. Sometimes they have a job interview, oftentimes they simply want to look and feel better. Whatever the case, if you hold an Oregon barber or cosmetology license and want to make a difference in the quality of someone’s life, let’s talk.

Board of Directors Volunteer

Are you looking to use your talents and expertise for something more than just your 9-to-5? CSS is seeking diverse, energized professionals to serve on its board of directors. Responsibilities include attending a monthly board meeting, attending fundraising events, 3-year board terms, availability of at least 2 hours a month for CSS-related business, and providing a financial contribution that's meaningful to you.

Kitchen Volunteer

CSS can always use some help building and delivering food boxes or planning delicious meals for our clients. Tuesdays are the heavy lifting day, creating and delivering food boxes to our Safe Spot Communities across Eugene, noon-4 pm (2-hour shifts are available). Fridays are for recipe-building, food storage, meal planning, and preparing tasty and nutritious meals from local food banks,11 am-2:30 pm.

Artist

Calling digital and traditional artists who want to help us create visuals for CSS social media, flyers, and other projects! The ability to draw/paint/model/sew/etc. Conestoga Huts is a must. We may ask you to send a sample of 3-6 works you've created, along with a rough estimate of how long it generally takes you to create a finished piece. We're happy to give attribution for your artwork.

Tutor

Many of our clients are engaged in study for a GED or college-level work and could use help tackling their math studies, building confidence in writing, or building the study habits needed for academic success. Perhaps you would like to accompany someone on their journey? Ideally, tutoring sessions would be able to be held sometime during the business day, M-F 9-4 pm.
